“It takes a village to raise a child!”
This is an old African proverb that encapsulates for me my ethos and approach to mental health.
We live in a world of instant gratification and self-prioritisation where people are primarily looking out for themselves and the next quick fix.
Mental health in Northern Ireland has for decades been something that has not been fully addressed – for a variety of reasons. These challenges have only been exacerbated by COVID 19 and will be further impacted by the cost of living crisis that we are facing.
Poor mental health affects every aspect of life. It impacts on the world of work, society & community and our personal life. Learning from the African proverb, it will take a whole system approach to address this, and it will take time.
I created Still Therapy and Consultancy after over 30 years experience working as a Registered Nurse with specialist experience as a health visitor, family nurse and palliative care rapid response Marie Curie nurse. This has given me extensive experience within a clinical/community setting, working with clients of all ages and stages of life, from birth to end of life care. Click for experience.
My practical experience is complimented by sound academic and theoretical knowledge and qualification which supports me to adapt to changing situations and teach/counsel on difficult topics such as grief, loss, poverty, childhood adverse experiences, trauma, interpersonal relationships, conflict resolution and helping with communication issues through repairing and building relationships. As part of my continuous personal development, I trained as a counsellor/lecturer and have been working for organisations including MS Society NI, Wave Trauma, NEXUS, South West Regional College and the Northern Health & Social Care Trust.
I created Still Therapy & Consulting on three key pillars – Listen, Love & Learn.
I work with a range of clients including:
- corporate work providing training, group/team/1-2-1 work;
- individuals
- couples and families
- specialist groups providing support
Specialist:
As a result of my extensive work in the field of trauma, I can tailor bespoke specialist courses to meet the need of organisations or individuals. My experience has taught me that key triggers for poor mental health are linked to adverse childhood experiences. This aspect of my work can lead to better parenting and can also indirectly positively impact on performance at work.
Examples of the workshops and training that I offer can be found here and my parenting work here
